Cavalier, North Dakota

Cavalier is the largest city in Pembina County, North Dakota, United States. It is the county seat of Pembina County.[5] The population was 1,246 at the 2020 census.[3] Cavalier was founded in 1875 and became the county seat in 1911.

Although they bear the same name, Cavalier is not located in nearby Cavalier County. The Tongue River flows past Cavalier and Cavalier Air Force Station is located near the city.

History

Cavalier was laid out in 1875 on open land.[6] The city was named for Charles Cavileer, an early settler in Pembina County (a recording error accounts for the error in spelling, which was never corrected).[7] A post office has been in operation at Cavalier since 1877.[8] Cavalier was incorporated in 1902.

In the early 1970s, the city of Cavalier's population quadrupled in size due to the U.S.' anti-ballistic missile program. This was in preparation of a nuclear attack on the U.S. during the Cold War with the Soviet Union.

Climate

Cavalier has a warm-summer humid continental climate (Koppen: Dwb). Summers are warm, sometimes hot, while winters are very cold, sometimes severely cold. Precipitation is mostly confined to late spring into early fall and peaks in June. Winter is very dry with little precipitation, almost always in the form of snow.[11]

YYour Invited to visit RSL3 Missile Site Tours located on Hwy 5 in West Cavalier ND.  RSL3 was part of The Stanley Mickelson Safeguard Complex, a six site defensive Anti Ballistic missile site which used nuclear tipped missile to intercept incoming enemy missiles.   Its multiple radar sites and 4 remote launch sites mission was to defend our offensive ICBM's (150 Minuteman Missiles) and their Command Launch Centers scattered across the North Dakota Country side during the height of the Cold War

RSL-3, is a Remote Sprint Launch facility in Cavalier County, North Dakota near Concrete. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2018.

Part of the Safeguard missile defense program, RSL-3 is one of four Remote Sprint Launch sites that were built in northeastern North Dakota as part of the Stanley R. Mickelsen Safeguard Complex, the first anti-ballistic missile system built in the United States.
