September 16, 2024 Evening — Camping In Zurich, Montana

Updated: 2 days ago

My goal today was to get to Harve, Montana and spend the night in the Wally Wotld parking lot. I am 60 miles east of Harve having driven about 150 miles today. But this campground is oh so much better than a Walmart parking lot. At 6 pm it is still 79 degrees -/ meaning sleeping in Hi Ho Silver would be uncomfortable until way past midnight. So I broke out the tent and am enjoying catching some breeze.

The 150 miles is disappointing because I need to up my pace. However, there was so much to pull over for snd take photos.

Some questions from today:

Why are dinosaurs a big part of Montana?

What is meant by the “Hi-Line”?

How many Amtrak passengers originate their travels in Montana?

Some observations:

Freight trains are a big deal out here (I’m thinking Norgh Dakota and Montana). By big deal I mean I see a lot of them, mostly (all?) going east to west (or vice versa).

Still amazed by the nine hole golf courses and their quality.

I have a tooth that aches. Praying it stops!

While I enjoy these micro towns, I am way too much of a convenience person to deal with driving 130 miles to Walmart as those who live in Glasgow must do.

Zurich is an unincorporated community in Blaine County, Montana, United States, located at 48°35′4″N 109°1′50″W.[3] Located along the Hi-Line of Montana, between Harlem and Chinook,[4] along U.S. Route 2. It has a post office with the ZIP code of 59547,[5] and a public school serving grades PK through 8. There is also a bar; the store and bank are closed and abandoned, as are two grain elevators and other business buildings. Various online sources give the population as 22-23 residents.

Sometime around 1887, Great Northern Railway officials named one of their main line sidings Zurich, for the city in Switzerland.[7] A post office was established in 1907. In 1913 the townsite was platted. In 1923, a population increase was occasioned by the arrival of Volga Germans seeking employment in sugar beet farming.

Amtrak’s Empire Builder, which operates between Seattle/Portland and Chicago, passes through the town on BNSF tracks, but makes no stop. The nearest station is located in Havre, 31 miles (50 km) to the west.

Zurich School is a public school located in ZURICH, MT. It has 24 students in grades PK, K-8 with a student-teacher ratio of 8 to 1.
