Writing this post as more of a historical datapoint than anything else. I think there is general consensus that the next period of time will see the deportation of at least 11 million immigrants and many more if the conservative pundits are correct. Behind that effort I believe there will be a great deal of chaos politically, legally, socially and perhaps morally.
Intellectually it will be interesting how it plays out. I hope I can keep my emotions out of it — fat chance my mind tells me.
I’m disgusted with how all the media covers this subject. Most sensationalize it, tugging at our emotions. It is rare to find factual reporting as Steve Ballmer does above. Few of us — any of us? — can discuss the details of the immigration issue. For example, we’ve heard for decades that our immigration process is broken and our laws need to be updated. What are the specifics? Are we going to deport millions of people before we fix the laws? Why are immigrants allowed to stay in the country for years before their asylum cases are heard?
My disgust with ALL media goes much deeper. Too much coverage of personal attacks and so little policy discussion. Goddamn it, inform us and make us think!
But the reality is I have absolutely zero control, influence or say on this topic. I have finally — FINALLY — learned to stop watching Wahoowah sporting events on tv. I stopped because watching wasn’t enjoyable — it just stressed me out. Hopefully I can soon learn to do the same with the news. I have started by cancelling my subscriptions to the WSJ and NYT. I also avoid news on the radio and tv. I do enjoy policy discussions with my brother in law even though again I have zero control. I enjoy those because they make me think and force me to articulate my thoughts and back them up with reasons (which are hopefully factually based!).
