When I was a kid, my family's tradition was to put up our Christmas tree on Christmas Eve. I remember it did make the day incredibly special but it was a bit of a bummer not to have a tree up earlier in Advent. I recall as a teenager attending midnight services and at least one Christmas Eve we had dinner with another family at their house. I remember not being a fan of being away from home on Christmas Eve.
Through the years, I experienced and formed new traditions, most of which expanded the preparation for Christmas into earlier in Advent.
Most recently I've been away from family and friends on Christmas Eve. I've done that intentionally as a way of backing away from what had become some irrational expectations. It has also provided me a much needed perspective on how others celebrate or in some cases are unable to celebrate Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
I thought this article was a fun overview of some Christmas Eve traditions.
