Golf At Chinook Golf Club

Havre, Montana

September 17, 2024

When I left Zurich this morning, my intention was a quick tour of Chinook, a quick stop at the Chinook golf course and to be in Shelby, Montana by now.

Well, I’m not in Shelby. I’m 102 miles away or 80 minutes by Montana time.

There was so much to photograph in Chinook and the golf course — there was no one there (honor system) and the course looked very green. So $15 in the shoot and I was on the course. Wonderful course. The greens were topnotch — fast and undulating. I left a note saying how much I enjoyed the course.

One person was playing behind me. We struck up a conversation after he finished. A retired pastor who lives in Boise. He had been a pastor in Chinook and is back to marry the daughter of a couple he married many years ago. We talked for at least 90 minutes about golf, basketball, college athletics, farming, ranching, living in rural Montana. Said he knows a fellow who farms 390,000 acres. Bought up the land as others got out of farming. Land extends from the Canadian border to the Missouri River. Hard to comprehend.

In the past four days I’ve talked to two kids on their LDS mission and a retired pastor. What am I to make of that? I’m comfortable in my beliefs — and my nonbeliefs.

One of the segments of my video above is upside down. For no apparent reason. But it’s only about a minute long!

I learned from the pastor that there were small railroad towns about every 20 miles out here so the steam engines could get water and fuel. Makes sense — I had not thought about that.

Note the old fashion credit card machine!
