Embarrass, Minnesota

Embarrass, Minnesota

I saw a road sign for Embarrass and I’m not … embarrassed that I too the exit. The town (not much of one — more an area) is about 15 miles from the highway I was on going to Voyager National Park. As usual, well worth the “wrong turn.” I come to places like Embarrass and I wonder what it is like to live here. And I remember again that everyone who lives here has a story — many stories — and they are all deeply personal and emotional — sad, humorous, insightful or just plain darn important to each person. I wish I’d appreciated so long ago how much fun and rewarding it is to hear other people talk about themselves and their life experiences. I’ve missed out on so many opportunities because I was caught up in my own world. “It’s not about me.”

Name

The name Embarrass was derived from the French word embarras, based on its meaning of "to hinder with obstacles or difficulties". It was given this name by the French fur traders who were some of the first Europeans to visit the area, and who found the narrow, shallow river very difficult to navigate, and named the river "Embarras".
