Hamlet, Village, Town? — In New York, a hamlet is a community that is not incorporated as a village, i.e. an unincorporated community. Hamlets usually have names based off of a local school district, post office, or fire district. Because a hamlet has no government of its own, the town it is in provides municipal services and government.
My drive was through rural New York passing through a lot of hamlets. How rural? Certainly no Walmarts or McDonalds. Communities formed in the early 1800s. Must be cold and snowy here in the winter although the roads are in good shape.
Fun to find Charlotteville. I bought a soda in the country store and the fellow said many tourists think the name is Charlottesville.
I also drove through Madison and near Richmondville.
Pretty much a white area.
I fell short of my goal by about 70 miles. When I arrived in Morrisville (on US 20 that ends in Newport, Oregon!) I Google campgrounds and found one with available sites seven miles outside of town. It felt good to call it a day
